Soul Release, The New OCG Spice ?!?!

It’s fascinating, almost poetic, to observe how cards that were used in the early days of the game make periodic comebacks. Certain mechanics, once unexplored, have evolved to the point where these cards become viable at competitive levels. Examples include “Royal Prison” during the Salamangreat format, “Smoke Grenade of the Thief” in the early days of Infernoble, “D.D. Crow” which continues to see play, and many others.

One card that has stirred quite a buzz in the recent OCG format’s final week is “Soul Release.”

“Soul Release” Card Text: Target up to 5 cards in any GY(s); banish them.

As decks increasingly rely on disruptions and follow-ups using graveyard effects, this card proves highly effective, providing an offensive response to the opponent’s primary, if not sole, sources of interaction.

Particularly impactful against Fire King, it banishes cards like “Sacred Fire King Garunix,” “Promethean Princess, Bestower of Flames,” “Original Sinful Spoils – Snake-Eye,” simplifying a field filled with various layers of interactions without clear choke points. It proves more efficient than other board breakers, exponentially reducing the opponent’s available plays for disruption.

Against Labyrinth, “Soul Release” is employed to banish cards such as “Big Welcome Labyrinth,” “Welcome Labyrinth,” “Arias the Labyrinth Butler,” “Labyrinth Cooclock,” “Labyrinth Stovie Torbie,” and “Labyrinth Chandraglier,” or to force a preemptive activation of “Rumpel Teufel” and “Transaction Rollback.”
